Emily Baxter is an interdisciplinary artist that finds much of her inspiration from text. Thinking about the relationship between text, art, time, and space, Baxter questions the temporality of the context given to a work in a gallery space and how art can be recontextualized past its original presentation once viewed by an audience. Her treatment of appropriated imagery and text from various artists demonstrates the individuality of the viewer and the lack of control one has over their own works' impact once displayed. She works by deconstructing art from vastly different eras and collaging them together by means of sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing, and installation, allowing a new life to be reconstructed from the old. Through this process, Baxter’s work allows the art to move away from being a static object and towards a living body that converses with the past, present, and future, creating a space within itself for the viewer to experience through their own lens. She views her art practice as a constant collaboration between herself and her surroundings, highlighting the individuality of the human experience.
